Ahh! We had such a fun time sneaking away to Charleston for a long weekend… I mean long weekend but short trip? I guess 4 days doesn’t seem like a short trip but my lord when it takes you 5 hours just to get out of Florida, you automatically subtract two days from your trip for travel time (aka Spencer serenading me huge Adele fan while I make empty promises to drive after our next stop). Teamwork makes the dream work.
We rolled into Charleston on a cloudless Saturday afternoon, just in time to check in. We stayed at the King Charles Inn in downtown. The room was small but one of the nicest we’ve stayed in, way too fancy for us. Honestly, our favorite amenity was the parking. We parked our jeep in the covered parking area and didn’t move her until we were packed up to leave.
We stayed downtown on purpose because we knew we would be walking everywhere. I thought I had mentally prepared myself for a weekend full of walking, but my legs didn’t get the memo right away. I’d be surprised if there was a street we didn’t make it down though, #yolo.
We made reservations for a few places during our stay, one of them being Magnolia’s. The hype is real. Spencer had the buttermilk fried chicken, I had the shellfish over grits and we shared the pan seared sea scallops. We really loved our main dishes, but I think it’s safe to say we’ll be dreaming of those sea scallops covered in a brandied apple-bacon cream for quite some time.
Whats the one word you want to hear on a sleepy Sunday morning? Brunch. We went to Cannon Green for brunch on Sunday. Spencer got the diablo roja, which was a little too different for me, so I stuck with the avocado toast & loved it. We decided to get french toast for the table and WOW. I know they change their french toast pretty often but if you see the delicious description with caramel & apples, drop everything and order that!!
Luckily, we happened to be in Charleston on the second Sunday of the month. What, you don’t know what that means? … we didn’t either. A long section of King Street, the street with just about every retail store you can think of, was blocked off and flooded with families, shoppers & entertainment. It was a fun way to explore the area without having to worry about traffic/lights/crossing signs. If you do find yourself on King St, look for River Street Sweets Candy Store. I’ll just go ahead and say you’re welcome now. The pralines are Out. Of. This. World. Do yourself a favor and commit to the buy 3 get one free deal, you won’t be disappointed.
Our parting meal on Monday morning was a box of biscuits from Callie’s Hot Little Biscuits. It’s a tight squeeze once you get inside the door, but I’d crawl over hot coals to order these babies again. I’d say it’s more of a gourmet biscuit joint. We ordered the cinnamon, blackberry and cheese & chives biscuits. My favorite by far was the cheese & chives. There were pieces of bacon, chives, cheese and …. drumroll please, cream cheese. Yes, you read that right. Cream cheese! Oh it was so so good!
(I don’t have time to smile for pictures when biscuits are present..)
So everyone knows, I just typed “Since” and was auto corrected to “Main event”… so I’m going to roll with it. Main event Monday was my birthday (!!!) and Spencer stopped at a sweet little bakery called Sugar on our way out of town to get me a birthday cupcake. He’s the sweetest cupcake of them all & he makes me laugh so hard I can barely stand straight.
We were happy to finally make it to Charleston & would recommend a weekend getaway to anyone interested.
